Nap Nanny Versus the Earplug

Congratulations to Jennifer – the winner of the Nap Nanny from her comment ‘I also like The Survival Guide for Rookie Moms on face book!’

I sleep with one earplug in my ear. It’s a habit formed 6 years ago when my infant daughter, Kendall, wouldn’t sleep in anything other than her car seat or swing. During a particularly bad stretch, the swing had to be moving. So there we were, my husband and I, lying in our bed wide awake while Kendall slept peacefully in her loudly swaying swing. It was out of my own need for a good night’s sleep that I began my relationship with the earplug.

It was one of our many adventures in getting Kendall to sleep throughout the course of her first year. She slept on my chest for a while, that is until I woke up in the middle of a nightmare and nearly launched her across the room. We did sleep train eventually. That CIO method is torture, but it eventually (and painfully) worked. Then we went on vacation and the pack-n-play just didn’t cut it, so it was back to the car seat… at 7 months old!!  At 9 months she was still sleeping peacefully in her car seat on the floor next to her crib. This was absurd and something had to give.

After searching high and low on the internet to find something, anything that had a similar shape to that darn car seat, my husband, frustrated with my frustration, said, “Why don’t you just make the damn thing?”.

Nap NannyThis was when I embarked on a journey that resulted in the Nap Nanny. It was all about sleep… not just for my baby, but for ME!!  The worst fights I’ve ever had with my husband were in the middle of the night when both of us were too exhausted to move, let alone tend to a crying baby. It didn’t help that my husband and I were both working. I was still full time as a sportscaster having gone back to work when Kendall was 10 weeks old. Getting home for the “Letterman feeding”, worked out nicely early on, but it didn’t take long for the three other “wake up calls” to start to wear on us.

We all want our children to be comfortable. We all want them to be happy. But let’s face it, if we’re not comfortable and happy, how can we make them comfortable and happy? It’s a cycle that’s so often overlooked. If the baby gets no sleep, the parents get no sleep, which makes enjoying those early years a real challenge.

So, my daughter just turned 7 and she’s no longer sleeping in her car seat! My son is 5 and never presented us with any sleep challenges. Neither got to use the Nap Nanny, but thousands of other parents have. One of the best emails I ever received from a mother and proud Nap Nanny owner was “thanks for giving me my life back”.  THAT is what this was all about in the first place:  happy baby; happy parents.

I still use that earplug, even with the swing long since silenced. Some habits are hard to break. I’m just hopeful the Nap Nanny has put a small dent in the earplug industry.

The innovative foam design cradles the infant while a safety harness holds the baby securely in place.  The 30 degree angle mimics the contours of a car seat, making the Nap Nanny Chill the perfect solution for babies who don’t like to sleep on their backs.  Also use for feeding time, play time, and managing multiples on your own.

Satisfied Nap Nanny customers have consistently reported significant increases in sleep duration and infant comfort.  A large base made from high density foam provides maximum stability, while a new harness design ensures a safe, snug fit.  Weighing only 3 pounds, the Nap Nanny Chill travels and stores easily and includes a washable, waterproof cover.

  126. I love the sage dot Nap Nanny!

I have an 8 year old that didn’t sleep unless he was held nursed or in a carseat. I wish we had a nap nanny when he was a baby… It looks like their hips are less flexed and that is a lot better for a baby’s back and hips than extended time in a carseat!

    Great product!
