Erica’s Invisalign Journey

One Month and Counting

And we’re off…..

This is the second post of my Invisalign® journey.  It’s so exciting because I am now the proud owner of a brand new pair of Invisalign® aligners!  Yep, that’s right, I was professionally fitted with Dr. Daher last week.  I have to admit that I was a little nervous to get them….I wasn’t sure what to expect.  Would the appointment be hours long while the Invisalign® technician fitted the aligners in my mouth? Would it be painful?.  I am happy to report that I was in and out in 15 minutes and there was NO pain involved whatsoever. This was a huge relief, I’m such a chicken….you would never believe that I have given birth to two children and now worried about a little dentist appointment.  It also helped that the staff at Dr. Daher’s office are so helpful and patient with us newbies!!!

I am also happy to report that my Invisalign® look fantastic and the name is very apropos.  Most of my friends and family cannot tell I even have them.  I felt a bit of tightness during the first couple of days while my teeth were adjusting but now that I am 7 days into it I can’t even tell that I am wearing them.

To let you know how great they look  I did a little test. Recently, picking up my daughter from school, I didn’t tell any of the other moms that I had my new Invisalign®.  When I walked up to the school with a beaming smile on my face, not one mother noticed anything different about my appearance.  Finally, when I wasn’t sure if they truly didn’t notice anything different or if they were too polite to say anything …..I told them all.  I said “so what do you think of my Invisalign®”, to which they all squinted their eyes to see what I was talking about and many still couldn’t even see anything.  One noticed them on my bottom teeth then asked why I didn’t get them on the top as well (which of course I do have them on the top).  It was delightful…..and I feel great about the next few months of teeth straightening without all of the self consciousness of worrying about my appearance.

One aspect I didn’t expect about this whole process was that my daughter who is seven was very anxious about me getting Invisalign®.  When I asked her why, she told me that she was worried that I wouldn’t look like “me” after I had them on.  So, the day I got them, I picked her up from school and walked her home (all the way not letting on that I had them in my mouth)….it was over an hour before she even remembered that I had an appointment with Dr. Daher that day.  When she remembered she was scared to look but I told her that she had been talking to me for over and hour and hadn’t noticed I was wearing them.  Her anxiety vanished immediately.  Now, to her the aligners are a cool thing that mommy puts in and takes out of her mouth….not some scary metal contraption that is going to make mommy “look weird”.

Anyway, I am one week into my treatment and happy so far.  I will keep you posted as I change my aligners (which is every two weeks) and show you pictures of my progress.  I even included a picture below of me with the aligners in…..can you see them?

In the Beginning…..

For all of you mother’s out there, I want to share an upcoming journey that I am about to embark on.  I am in the process of getting  Invisalign® to correct my slightly less than perfect smile. I’m no Igor in the mouth department but hey a few tweaks certainly won’t hurt my pearly whites.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Invisalign® product, Invisalign® (sometimes referred to as clear braces) is a method of orthodontic therapy promoted as an “invisible” way of straightening teeth without using traditional braces. It instead uses a series of clear custom-fabricated aligners designed to gradually and sequentially move teeth to their desired positions.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am a mother of two young children, business woman and featured in the media quite often.  I am at the point in motherhood where my kids are slightly more independent and a little “me” time is due….it may not happen often but when it does I like to make it count.  I have always struggled with crowded teeth that make it hard to floss and brush properly and I have always wanted to make a change.  My husband recently asked what my “bucket list” activities were. I think he was prepared for a new sports car, trip to Tuscany or some exotic sized diamonds….instead he got the shock of his life with gasp…straight teeth! And so the journey began….

Through a mommy blogger event for the company, Invisalign® that I recently attended which was introducing their new product Invisalign Teen, I met local Vancouver Orthodontist, Dr. Sam Daher who is touted as one of the leading providers of the Invisalign® technique in Canada.  We discussed my teeth and I explained that as much as I wanted to have my teeth straightened, I didn’t want to have metal braces.  He gave me his card and invited me for a free consultation at his office where, not only was I greeted by experienced and extremely friendly staff, but Dr. Daher took the time to review my situation,  explain the  Invisalign®  process and articulate how it would be a great alternative for me in my current position in life.

So, here I am, about to receive my first set of trays (they are removable) and I am so excited.  Since my first visit to Dr. Dahar’s office I have since spoken to many people who have gone through an Invisalign® treatment, who are in my age group and have had great experiences.  Come share my Invisalign® journey and  stay tuned for my next blog post AFTER I have the Invisalign® product on and working to straighten my pearly whites!!!!

  1. Hi there. Can’t wait to read your experiences with invisalign. I have decided to get it done instead of normal braces. My impressions will be taken next week.
I’m really worried about how much it will hurt though (as in the actual invisalign plates, not the impressions). When u are able to, can u please tell me if the pain is constant or if it’s just when you change plates. Also, does you speech change.

    Good luck!

    • Hi Suzie, I just got my aligners put on and it’s been awesome. It didn’t hurt at all. I had a bit of tightness for the first couple of days but now I forget that I am wearing them. My speech didn’t change. I too was worried that it might (as I talk to client’s all day long) but I didn’t expereince any change. It’s so neat as I feel like my teeth are changing already and it’s only been a week. How exciting. Good luck with your Invisalign!
