GRAMMA’S CORNER

The anticipated day finally arrives, grandchildren ages 8, 5 and 2 are here. Doors swing open, hugs and kisses abound and a thousand shoes and sneakers are now blocking the doorway for the entire visit.

Ok, everyone is here, the requests start – Papa can we go fishing, Gramma can we bake cookies – let the chaos begin!!! We have two beds and 8 guests and one of the beds is mine!!! Thank goodness for inflatables. These are the times I wish our house was a bit more roomy but close quarters are what memories are made of – right???

PWcraftOur usual calm, tidy and peaceful space is, within a matter of minutes, looking like a war zone of toys and craft items scattered throughout the house. I’m thinkin’, was it really a good idea to purchase that craft box and fill it with all this stuff. And glue, let’s not forget the glue – I’m just thankful they make it washable these days!!! That trip to the Loonie Store seemed a good idea at the time!

Now let’s talk about those wee fingerprints and smudges which mysteriously appear on freshly cleaned windows and mirrors. As frustrating as the fingerprints seem at the time I’m reluctant to remove them too soon as it’s a reminder of the fun times we’ve had. But the jam prints and fruit flies ultimately forces me to bring out the window cleaner and once again we have a view.

At the end of the visit we look forward to having our space back. There’s hugs, kisses and waves goodbye. We close the door, sit on our favorite chair, look at each other and wish they would come back. For the next few days we find it much too quiet – the laughter is gone and the electricity of voices in the air has faded. We now have our calm, tidy, and peaceful home back but can’t wait for their return.

  1. Great post. My mom feels the same way in terms of the chaos…but, like you….wouldn’t have it any other way. Thanks for sharing!

  2. My parents have a hard time with the mess when the “grandkids” come to visit….but, the wonderful memories always make up for it.
