Welcome mompreneur Johanna Denize as this week’s guest blogger
When I had my first son Tom in 2010, I immediately started noticing dangers like never before. A typical mom thing! Trying to walk with Tom through the streets of San Francisco, I discovered that I could not walk safely across the streets pushing the stroller in the evenings as cars simply would not stop, and the risk of having the stroller hit was huge.
The fact is drivers’ vision is seriously impaired in the dark. Not even streetlights make up for the loss in vision. No matter how well they drive, they simply can not see as well as in daylight. Most traffic accidents involving pedestrians do happen in the dark and a pedestrian is killed in traffic every 120 minutes in the US and a pedestrian is hurt in traffic every 8 minutes.
I was born in Sweden, a notoriously dark and cold country, and grew up always wearing a reflector attached to my clothes. Sweden has the lowest pedestrian per capita death rate in the world and it is in a large part thanks to the knowledge and use of reflectors. Pedestrian reflectors increase the wearer’s visibility by anywhere from 300 to 1000% and the use of reflectors has been proven to decrease the number of pedestrians involved accidents. In fact the risk decreases up to ten times simply by wearing a reflector.

Realizing that reflector usage is not common at all in the US or Canada, I set about to change that. Roadside workers, police, and firemen use reflective clothing to stay safe on the job, but our children are sent out without any safety gear at all. Even if the US is a car centered country more and more people, adults and kids, turn to walking, running and cycling, both for exercise and for environmental reasons, but unfortunately the US has one of the highest traffic accident and mortality rates of the industrialized world. There is no reason at all why that should be. Reducing accidents can be done, and one simple step is increasing our visibility on the roads by wearing inexpensive, super easy to attach reflectors.

After much research, designing and work, I launched
Safees in 2012. Safees focus is clear: providing the best quality pedestrian reflectors to as many children and adults as possible to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads. Safees reflectors are manufactured in Finland by the world’s leading reflector manufacturer and the original inventor of Safees with years of experience. Safees are of extremely high quality and thoroughly tested and certified. A reflector is not just a reflector, the prisms that reflect light have to be razor sharp and all details need to perfectly made in order for them to reflect light well. The best and most safe reflectors are hard prism reflectors like Safees. Safees can be attached to anyone moving around in traffic: pedestrians, cyclists, horses, strollers, pets, skaters, etc. When manufacturing Safees nothing is wasted, no harmful waste is produced and everything is used directly or recycled. And of course, the Safees themselves are 100% recyclable.
Using reflectors can help save lives. It is as an easy, inexpensive solution to a serious problem that so gravely and unnecessarily impacts our children’s and our lives. Safees are on a mission to increase safety for all our children on our roads. Safees pedestrian reflectors will be available in retail stores across the USA in the fall and are always available on www.safees.com for $6 each and shipping is free on all orders over $25. Significant discounts are available for all nonprofits and schools and Safees is happy to work with groups and organizations promoting road safety.
